Get the Most From Your Garments!

There are so many fabric choices out there. But how do you know which fabric is right for the occasion? Here are some of the coming season's best fabric choices.

Choose the best fabric for the task:

When choosing a garment, pay special attention to the fabric, occasion and function of the piece. This will help guide you to make an informed decision and get the most value out of your wardrobe. Tweed, twill and corduroy are some of autumns most sought after fabrics, and for good reasons. These three fabrics are durable, comfortable, and hard working making them a great addition to your cold weather wear.

TWILL

Twill fabric is a type of textile weave with diagonal ribs, whereas in contrast a plain weave is aligned in a simple criss-cross pattern. The side of the twill fabric with the most pronounced wale (number of ridges per inch) is the front of the fabric. This is also referred to as the face while the opposite side is called the back. The face is typically more durable, more attractive and is the side most often used by designers as the fashion side of the fabric.

When a twill fabric has fewer interlacings, the yarn is able to move more freely thus making the fabric more pliable and easier to drape than plain weaves. Some fabrics simply aren't commonly made with a twill weave, sheer fabrics being one of them. this is typically because a twill weave has such an interesting design and texture that anything printed on the fabric would be distorted.

When twill is woven with fewer interlacings it produces high fabric counts making the weave more durable and water resistant. As an added benefit, stains are less noticeable on twill's uneven surface than on plain weaves that typically have smooth surface weaves. Twill is a great weave for sturdy working clothes and is often used in denim, making Twill pants a popular addition to every closet.

CORDUROY

This ancient Egyptian cotton weave existed for thousands of years before becoming the corduroy that we know today. In its beginning, corduroy was known as 'fustian' and became popular with the growth of the European cotton trade beginning in the 12th century.

Fustian is a part of the tufted velvety textiles family that originated in the East and was exported throughout Europe via Italy. Because of this it became an exotic fabric sought after by royalty and wealthy Europeans.

The fustian weave became corduroy around the late 18th century. Presumably, the then predominately English manufactured cotton weave used a French translation of 'cloth of the King' (corde du Roi) to promote an image of prestige and royal quality.

Corduroy worked its way into fashion in the 1920's and 30's in the form of suits, jackets, caps, and trousers. Worn by all ages, both rich and poor, corduroy continued to be worn as work wear and sportswear throughout the rest of the century because of its practicality and comfort. this weave has been around for centuries and is typically used in outerwear and in the colder months as a durable pant option.

Corduroy has gone through many transformations through the years and it seems that due to its practicality and comfort it will never go out of style.

TWEED

Tweed is a type of fabric that originated in Scotland and is made from rough spun, woven wool. It is traditionally closely related to twill, but it may or may not use a twill design. By using yarns of different colors many cloth makers will heather the garment to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Traditionally, tweed was hand dyed using the natural dyes of the area. These dyes typically came from plants such as lichens, moss, and blackberries. Most tweeds are woven by machine. However, Harris Tweed (the most widely known variety) is still hand woven.

Tweed is a strong, manageable fabric that is ideal for the fashion and interior design industry. It is highly water resistant and very durable, making it an ideal choice for outerwear. Thus, making tweed blazers and tweed jackets for women an in demand accessory. Being that the weave of tweed is fairly loose, it makes the fabric a great choice for all seasons. Warm in the winter, yet breathable for the summer, tweed is water resistant, biodegradable and manufactured with great attention to sustainability and energy efficiency.
