To the best of my recollection, they do sit at the natural waist. I try to buy jeans that sit at the natural waist because they look better on me. But I'm in New England and we've had a horrible cold snowy and I haven't worn those jeans since the summer time. I've also gained weight in this miserable winter so I need to lose a few before I put those jeans back on. I do remember that they are pretty and I like them.

does the fabric have any stretch in the waistband?

BEST ANSWER: The pants are made of a fabric with a small amount of stretch, which is very comfortable. However, the waistband is made of the same fabric, with the same small amount of stretch. It's not nearly the same amount of stretch you get in a waistband with elastic pieces in the waist.

Yes, there is stretch if you need it, they fit very well if you don't. I think they are the best jeans I've ever had, have always worn the regular L.L. Bean's jeans, but these are even better. They don't bag and spring right back. They launder and dry in the dyer, no shrinkage. I just ordered a third pair!!!!!!
